breaking news. a toddler was rescued after falling into the water. cynne simpson is live at the scene. >> if you had been down to the washington morph, you would know what the setup is. the fish are displayed here. there is a small gap between where the fish are and the actual block. a 14-month-old baby tumbled into the water below. at the washington more for -- wharf, parents and grandparents were holding their children tighter. >> it really scared me. >> a tractor was helping a mother select seafood when the baby went tumbling into the water. >> i could not fit in between.

i was hoping i could get her. i could see her looking at me, but she was fully under water. >> i started crying, thinking that could be my child. >> please get the baby, lord. >> a complete stranger jumped into action shimmying into the water. >> a total stranger jumped in. we do not even understand how that young lady got down in there. >> together, a team of shoppers were able to pull the baby to safety. >> it took 15 people to push the boat off to get the other lady out. the ambulance came and help everybody out and everybody was ok. >> the baby was taken to the hospital in serious condition. the woman who jumped in after the baby was also taken to the hospital. here at the wharf people do not know who the woman was. they know her name was michelle. they are unanimous in saying she

was the hero here tonight. that is the latest in southwest. >> what a story. we are also falling breaking news from logan airport in boston where federal investigators are investigating a serious scare during a delta airlines flight. an off-duty police officer had to subdue a passenger who was trying to open an emergency door while the plane was in the air. this was delta flight 11 02 from orlando to boston. it appears no one was hurt in the incident. we are monitoring the developments in a deadly accident that killed a five-year ban girl today at the intersection of martin luther king jr. high way and see the avenue -- and [unintelligible] >> the new information from authorities a short time ago -- they released the identity of the little girl who lost her life. >> prince george's county police

say the 5-year-old from capitol heights was struck and killed by a red suv will try to cross the highway. the girl was with her father at the time. investigators are trying to determine what exactly went wrong in those final moments. they say it appears as though they tried to cross at a point in the road where there was no crosswalk. >> he has to be devastated. to see your child get hit is the worst thing in the world. >> my grandson and ran up and said he heard someone screaming on the highway. >> i tell my kids all the time that this can happen. kids get killed. i cannot imagine. >> the driver of the suv remained on the scene. authorities informed the occupants of the vehicle that the little girl had died. the heartbreak of that moment was too much to bear.

>> the driver had to be rushed to the hospital for a heart condition because he was really upset by the situation. >> at this point in the investigation now charges have been filed. >> thank you. we remain on store much as we keep an eye on flooding problems in the south. officials in mississippi are worried about rising river waters. this just came in from mississippi. hundreds of homes have been damaged. this is on top of destruction in memphis, tennessee which has already cost $300 million in damage. we have the latest on what is happening down south. >> dramatic pictures from the ground. this is from an orbiting satellite today. there is memphis. look in the center. if you look close you can see the muddy mississippi, at some

places 3 miles across. it is not just the flooding, but heat and humidity, with temperatures at 90 degrees. this is also a near-record flood in memphis. here is the outlook from the folks that monitor that system. this is from the army corps of engineers. it will be a record crest in vicksburg, mississippi in the next few days. for us, more comfortable. there are showers not far away. we will see clouds, but continued delightful weather. a lot changes as we head into the weekend. i will tell you more about that, and dramatic pictures about the flooding along the mississippi. new developments in the death of osama bin laden. top members of congress will review the bloody pictures of the dead al qaeda leader. a u.s. official says members of

the senate armed services and intelligence committees will be involved. the viewing will take place at cia headquarters. meanwhile, al qaeda is warning of retaliation. in an online video the terrorist group is calling to avenge osama bin laden's death. the teachers' union is talking about potential layoffs of hundreds of d.c. teachers. they will lose their jobs next month. school officials say positions are being eliminated because of budget cuts and shifting enrollment. school officials say, in their words, jobs are being reassessed but the teachers' union is painting a different picture. >> some teachers unions found a placement at another school. this is not an effort to try to remove teachers. >> this notion that these are layoffs -- for some individuals, these are layoffs. >> the teachers' union contends

the system is trying to get rid of older teachers. an exclusive i-team investigation into a high- profile murder case. eight men were convicted of the rape and murder of a woman in broad daylight. there is evidence that may prove they are innocent. the accusations of deceptive is -- of deception and lies now spans 27 years. >> you went too far. you do not do that to somebody. and that is what they did to her. >> barbara is recalling how her sister was murdered. catherine fuller was walking to pick up groceries for an elderly neighbor when she was grabbed at this corner of northeast, taken into this alley where she was beaten raped, and sodomized with a metal pipe. seven people were arrested in what is described as one of the most brutal gang crimes of the

time. this was one of the suspects' attorneys. >> it made people feel unsafe in the neighborhood. >> eight men were convicted. six are still in jail. they will be back in a court room later this year. there is dna that could not be tested three decades ago that is now in a laboratory, being compared to all the suspects. it seems that two other men could have committed the murder. four witnesses who testified at trial now say they lied. in sworn affidavits, the witnesses said police and prosecutors forced them to lie threatening them with jail sentences if they refused. there is evidence the police knew about two men who left the scene of the murder. one was later convicted of killing a witness to the murder, but prosecutors never told the defendants. levi was one of the men

at 11:00 with leon harris. this is abc 7 news at 11:00, on your side. fresh insights after an explosion in a home. the explosion completely destroyed one home and damaged several others. fire officials released the 911 recordings made just after the blast. john gonzalez is live in rockville with more. >> it was 3:00 in the morning. the basement filled with gas. it created an explosion that through the homeowners from their bedroom to the backyard. a week later, we have seen the pictures. tonight, we are hearing a terrifying the incident was. -- how terrifying the incident was. it was this improperly installed clothes dryer that

caused the explosion seriously injuring the couple. >> are your neighbors heard? >> please, send someone fast. >> we are hearing some of the frantic calls to 911 after the house exploded and caught fire. >> it smells like gas. >> they will be there shortly. >> the man on the line is one of many neighbors who called for help and came to the aid of the injured woman next door. >> she kept on saying, "help me up. i cannot read. please help me." >> you are hurt. sit down. >> they are on the way. >> the whole house is burning. >> fire officials say the man in the house was attempting to replace a gas-powered drier with an electric model but forgot to shut off the gas line. part of the roof fell on the house across the street. an electrician who will be working on some of the damaged

70's. right now we are looking at a beautiful temperature in washington down to a cool 63 degrees. the pollen count is 100 -- is 1057. that is for trees. look at the high temperatures around the country. we were in the 70's. records in the morning iowa, 95 degrees, omaha with 96. temperatures in alabama were in the 90's. temperatures are still in the 70's, and that is with humidity. will get a touch of that in the weekend. there is the mississippi and there is memphis under this area of cloudiness. right there, the mississippi is about 3 miles across. you see that brown. that arrow goes down into mississippi. at the bottom of all of this, there is louisiana.

there is new orleans. all of that mud is topsoil from the mid part of the country flowing into the gulf of mexico. the flood stage continues to move down the mississippi. at least there is no real heavy storms up there. there are some storms not too far away from us now. some of those will be getting a bit close as we get high into the weekend. still a dry pattern. later in the week, some of that moisture begins coming in. a cold start tomorrow. another delightful day. temperatures once again in the comfortable mid-70's with no humidity. with humidity, and increasing
